Update 2:30PM EST: MariaDB told us this afternoon that the announcement was delayed in order to fine-tune the messaging and does not indicate any problems with the product. “General availability hasn’t changed at all,” said Lilia Shirman, interim chief marketing officer. “It’s going to be available at the end of the month. We realized there were some additional things we wanted to talk about, so we decided to postpone the announcement to highlight more of capabilities than we originally planned. IT was more of a messaging and press release delay.”
Just six weeks after announcing a $9 million funding round and a high-powered new executive team, open-source relational database vendor MariaDB Corp. Ab. has abruptly postponed the launch of its MariaDB Enterprise Edition Spring Release.
The timing isn’t good for a company that’s trying to build momentum after just hiring Silicon Valley veteran Michael Howard as its new CEO and MySQL and MariaDB creator Michael “Monty” Widenius as CTO.
The Spring 2016 release of MariaDB Enterprise was due to be launched on March 2, with the company touting a number of new security features in a pitch sent to SiliconANGLE last week.
However, the day before the launch, MariaDB wrote to inform us that its decided to “postpone the announcement of the MariaDB Enterprise Edition Spring Release” until a later date. There was no additional information.
Postponements aren’t unheard of in the industry, but it’s rare to see them happen so close to the announcement date.
We’ve asked MariaDB the reason why it’s decided to put off the release, and if and when the new update will finally arrive. We’ll update this post if they get back to us.
